An emergency telephone mounted on a wall for quick access

Wildfire evacuations often happen with little notice, which is especially challenging without someone nearby to help load a car or make fast decisions.

Pre-plan the decision, not just the packing

Decide your evacuation trigger in advance (a specific alert level, not "when it feels bad") so you're not making a high-stakes judgment call under smoke and stress.

Build in outside help

Identify one or two people, ideally including someone outside the immediate risk area, who would help you evacuate or who you'd call en route. Register with any local reverse-911 or emergency alert system available in your area.

Keep a "go bag" with documents, medications, and basics permanently packed during fire season, rather than assembling it during an active alert.
